Dayak Beaded Sun Hat

A large aristocratic woman's woven palm leaf and cane sun hat (sa' ong) decorated with a central roundel of trade beads that represent the tendrils and facial features of Kayan gods. Hats of this size were used as sunshade. Beads, metallic beads, cotton, rattan base. Late 19th/early 20th century.
