AN AZTEC STONE STATUE OF XIUHTECUHTLI-HUEHUETEOTL.
Anthropos Gallery
A powerful Pre-Columbian basalt seated figure of a deity, probably a representation of Xiuhtecuhtli-Huehueteotl, Central Mexico, circa A.D. 1345 to 1521. There are remaining traces of red pigment, evoking an Aztec god of fire in a ritual stoic gaze. The complex headdress combines a multiple point crown-like front with the flanging backside of the merger of the elements. The arms are folded upon the knees.
