A FINE AND UNIQUE JAGUAR EFFIGY VESSEL, EL CHANAL TYPE, MIXTEC STYLE, POSTCLASSIC.
Anthropos Gallery
This exceedingly rare jaguar deity leans menacingly forward as if about to pounce on its prey, the eyes focused intently, his open mouth revealing gnarly fangs below the flaring nostrils. Remains of black resist symbolic decorations can be seen along its upper arms and torso, both top and underside. The tail is seen as a rhyton-shaped wide-mouthed spout with a dark red painted band encircling the rim. This ceramic is beautifully burnished.
