
ZUNI POLYCHROME DOUGH BOWL,1880-1890

Slightly out of round large bowl (17 3/16 widest rim diameter and narrowist diameter 15 13/16 inches) with three compositional capped spiral design elements together with embellished nestled feathers decorrating the interior. Unusually large open bowl with shaped rim, subtle overlapping on the interior compared to the corpus of the bowl. Center of bowl consists of a single large white slip circle surounded by a tan slip ring, encircled again by a thin white ring and terminating with a decorative tan ring embellished by repeating semi-circles.
Underside of bowl has a dark brown base, rim region decorated with three stylized and elongated repeating feather caps.

Provenance
As per information provided the by original collector: Phyllis Stewart of California, purchased the bowl in Arizona in 1917. Acquired by the present owner in 1988 from Stewart.
Condition
Intact, no restoration, note color transition from interior base to top of rim, base region with slight color fade showing that the piece was actually used extensively. Minute areas of pigment loss commensurate with age and use. Underside showing use at base and full rim original color.
